Groundbreaking Ceremony for the New Research Complex of CPSBB
The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new research complex of CPSBB started with a press conference at the House of Culture “Boris Hristov”, Plovdiv, on 16 July 2020. The CPSBB Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tsanko Gechev presented the project PlantaSYST and the launch of the construction of the new CPSBB research complex in Plovdiv, Trakia residential district. The European Regional Development Fund finances the building of the new CPSBB research complex through the Operational Program “Science and Education for Smart Growth” – project BG05M2OP001-1.003-0001-C01.
Mr. Stefan Stoyanov, Deputy Mayor of Plovdiv “Education and business development”, described the importance of the PlantaSYST project and CPSBB for the scientific and socio-economic development of Plovdiv and expressed once more the full support of Plovdiv Municipality and the Mayor’s office for CPSBB.
Mrs. Karina Angelieva, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, reiterated the support of the Bulgarian Government for the PlantaSYST project and underlined its strategic importance for Bulgaria, particularly for conducting cutting-edge research and for preventing the brain drain in the field of plant biology.
The press conference was attended by journalists from the national media, newspapers, online media, and the Bulgarian national TV.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony continued with a ceremonial blessing held on the construction site – Sveti Knyaz Boris I-Pokrastitel Str., Trakia district, by the Metropolitan Arsenii. There were speeches by Dr. Gechev, Mrs. Karina Angelieva, and the Mayor of Plovdiv Mr. Zdravko Dimitrov, followed by the “first dig” ceremony. The event was attended by many other high-ranked officials, including Mr. Dimitar Kerin, Deputy Regional Governor; Mr. Kostadin Dimitrov, Mayor of Trakia District; Directors of Agencies at the Operational Program “Science and Education for Smart Growth”; Prof. Dr. Martin Banov, Chairman of the Agricultural Academy of Bulgaria; Prof. Dr. Hristina Yancheva, Rector of the Agricultural University of Plovdiv; Prof. Dr. Plamen Mollov, Rector of the University of Food Technology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daniela Ganeva, Director of the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute; Directors of the local schools; the architects of the research complex; representatives from the PlantaSYST consortium; representatives of the GBS, the construction company.
